Diet Deep Dive - Paleo Diet
The Paleo diet focuses on consuming foods our hunter-gatherer ancestors believed to have eaten. The fundamental principle of the Paleo diet is to mimic the dietary patterns of our ancient predecessors with the assumption that it's better suited to the human genetic makeup. Here are some fundamental principles of the Paleo diet:
Emphasis on Whole Foods: The Paleo diet promotes consuming whole, unprocessed foods. This includes lean meats, fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and some oils, such as olive and coconut oil.
Exclusion of Grains: Grains, including wheat, rice, oats, and corn, are excluded from the Paleo diet.
No Dairy: Dairy products are generally avoided because it's believed that early humans did not consume milk or dairy. This includes milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products.
No Legumes: Legumes, such as beans, lentils, and peanuts, are excluded from the diet due to the belief that they may not have been a significant part of the Paleolithic diet.
Avoidance of Processed Foods: Highly processed foods, like sugar, artificial additives, and refined vegetable oils, are not allowed on the Paleo diet.
High Protein and Healthy Fats: The diet typically includes a higher protein intake, often from animal sources like meat and fish, and healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and oils.
Limited Starchy Vegetables: While non-starchy vegetables are encouraged, the intake of starchy vegetables like potatoes may be limited due to their higher carbohydrate content.
