Living Well with Bri

New hobbies help brain health

Now that I am officially a post-grad, I am exploring new hobbies! Will pickleball or training for a half marathon win?

Embracing the Joy of New Hobbies!

As I transition into post-grad life, navigating the responsibilities and newfound independence, I've realized that I have very few hobbies to call my own. In this chapter of my life, I plan on trying new hobbies, whether good or bad at them. Trying new things makes life more memorable and enjoyable! What hobbies are you thinking of starting?

Why trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone is important-

Flexing Those Mental Muscles: First and foremost, let's talk about brain plasticity. Picture your brain as a garden and new hobbies as the seeds waiting to be planted. When we engage in novel activities, our brains form new neural connections, strengthening cognitive function and enhancing creativity. So, not only are you having fun, but you're also giving your brain a fantastic workout!

Discovering Hidden Passions: How often have you stumbled upon something and thought, "Wow, where has this been all my life?" Trying new hobbies opens doors to uncharted territories of passion and interest. Who knows? You might uncover a hidden talent or a lifelong passion that sets your soul on fire.

Cultivating Well-being: In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's crucial to carve out time for activities that bring us joy. Engaging in hobbies we love promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and boosts overall well-being. It's like giving yourself a little slice of happiness each day.

Here's a list of hobbies and activities to get you started on your journey of exploration:

  1. Drawing or Sketching: You only need a pencil and paper to unleash your inner artist.

  2. Writing: Whether journaling, poetry, or short stories, writing is a fantastic way to express yourself.

  3. Gardening: Get your hands dirty and cultivate your little green oasis. Plus, there's something incredibly therapeutic about tending to plants.

  4. Cooking or Baking: Experiment with new recipes and flavors in the kitchen. Your taste buds will thank you!

  5. Photography: Capture the beauty of the world around you through the lens of a camera.

  6. Yoga or Meditation: Mindfulness nourishes your mind, body, and soul.

  7. DIY Crafts: There's no shortage of creative projects, from knitting to upcycling old furniture.

  8. Learning a Musical Instrument: Pick up a guitar, piano, or ukulele and serenade yourself with sweet melodies.

Remember, the beauty of hobbies lies in their diversity and accessibility. You don't need a hefty bank account to embark on these adventures— all you need is the curiosity and enthusiasm to start.

Actionable step of the day-

Make a list of hobbies you want to start recently, then take action sometime today or this week. It can be as simple as drawing or going on a walk. Change starts with one small action.
